When one stops to contemplate the mysteries of life, the universe, and everything, it can bring to mind some very unsettling questions. However, one also comes to realize that the sheer impossibility of our existence is itself one of the most amazing miracles in all of history. By all accounts, the chances for intelligent life to exist requires such a staggering amount of random chance and unbelievable luck that, if just looking at the odds, no sane person would bet on it ever occurring. Maybe there is an unseen hand guiding everything, but I tend to think that our evolution is an even bigger miracle if we weren’t created with some cosmic blueprint. Not only having a world in just the right position to actually be habitable, having it contain the correct mix of elements to sustain life, having enough water to allow life to flourish, and having life survive major catastrophic events, but to have the genetic code mutated in the exact right way to move us from single-celled organisms deep in the oceans to exceedingly complex, highly-intelligent individuals makes us the luckiest beings in the entire universe. And that is a comforting thought for those days when things are going horribly, and you think the entire universe is against you – it’s good to take a moment and remember that, in fact, it is more on your side than you could ever have hoped.
