Happy Columbus Day

Monday October 12, 2025

Columbus Day is a holiday with a complex and evolving history, celebrated in various countries to mark Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Here's a breakdown of its origin, meaning, and global observance:

Columbus Day in the United States

Origins
  • First celebrated in 1792 in New York City by the Columbian Order (Tammany Hall) to mark the 300th anniversary of Columbus’s landing.
  • Became a federal holiday in 1937, largely due to lobbying by Italian-American communities who saw Columbus as a symbol of their heritage.
  • The holiday was also partly a diplomatic gesture after the 1891 lynching of 11 Italian-Americans in New Orleans, one of the largest mass lynchings in U.S. history. President Benjamin Harrison declared a one-time national observance in 1892 to appease Italy.[1]
Current Observance
  • Celebrated on the second Monday of October.
  • Traditionally includes parades, especially in cities with large Italian-American populations like New York and San Francisco.
  • Recognized as a federal holiday, but not all states observe it. Some have replaced it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day to honor Native American history and culture.[2]

🌎 International Celebrations

Latin America
  • Mexico: Formerly celebrated as Día de la Raza ("Day of the Race"), now called Día de la Nación Pluricultural ("Day of the Pluricultural Nation").
  • Argentina: Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural ("Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity").
  • Peru: Día de los Pueblos Originarios y el Diálogo Intercultural ("Indigenous Peoples and Intercultural Dialogue Day").
  • Uruguay: Día de las Américas ("Day of the Americas").
Spain
  • Celebrates Día de la Hispanidad ("Day of Hispanicity") on October 12, also its National Day, coinciding with the religious festival of La Virgen del Pilar.[3]
Italy
  • Observes Giornata Nazionale di Cristoforo Colombo, especially in Little Italy communities around the world.
Bahamas
  • Celebrates Discovery Day to mark Columbus’s landing on Guanahaní (now San Salvador Island).

⚖️ Controversy and Alternatives
  • Critics argue Columbus’s arrival led to colonization, exploitation, and violence against Indigenous peoples.
  • Many U.S. cities and states now observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead, including California, Oregon, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C.
  • The shift reflects a broader effort to reframe history and honor the cultures and contributions of Native Americans.[4]

Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) was an Italian explorer and navigator whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean opened the way for European exploration and colonization of the Americas. Here's a concise overview of his life and legacy:

Early Life
  • Born: Between August 25 and October 31, 1451, in Genoa, Italy.
  • Background: Son of a wool weaver, Columbus had limited formal education but became a skilled sailor and navigator.
  • Early Career: He went to sea at a young age, traveling extensively around Europe and Africa. He studied geography, astronomy, and cartography in Lisbon.

Voyages of DiscoveryColumbus made four major voyages to the Americas under the sponsorship of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II of Spain:
  1. First Voyage (1492–1493)
    • Sailed with the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María.
    • Landed in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492, believing he had reached the East Indies.
    • Explored Cuba and Hispaniola, establishing a colony in present-day Haiti.
  2. Second Voyage (1493–1496)
    • Explored more Caribbean islands including Jamaica and Puerto Rico.
    • Attempted to strengthen Spanish presence in the region.
  3. Third Voyage (1498–1500)
    • Reached Trinidad and the northern coast of South America.
    • Faced political challenges and was briefly arrested and removed from his position as governor.
  4. Fourth Voyage (1502–1504)
    • Explored the coast of Central America, including Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.
    • Sought a passage to Asia but failed.

Legacy and Impact
  • Columbian Exchange: His voyages initiated the widespread exchange of plants, animals, cultures, and diseases between the Old and New Worlds.
  • Colonization: Paved the way for European colonization, which had devastating effects on indigenous populations.
  • Controversy: While once celebrated as a hero, Columbus is now a controversial figure due to his role in the exploitation and mistreatment of native peoples.

Death
  • Died: May 20, 1506, in Valladolid, Spain, largely forgotten and in poor health.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests
