Preparation

Your elevator pitch is essential for networking. To engage others in helping you you need them to fully understand your goals. And when you are in front of potential hiring managers it is very important you make a great impression.

​Candidate Networking Profile    (Company Targets)​

The Candidate Networking Profile is very important planning document for job seekers and those also looking to advance their careers. To reach your goal you need to know where you are going. All your networking efforts will be directed and focused by having this plan. It is a fluid document and use whatever format you like just make sure you do one and continuously update it as you learn more about your job industry and career goals.

 Make it graphically pleasing so you can send it to your networking contacts via email or hand them out at face to face meetings. Continue to adjust it adding and removing companies as you learn more about the market and your desired career goals. One sales person I met when networking had a list of logo's of the companies she was looking to connect with to sell her payroll services. Very effective and visual.

I provided two file formats here so one you can print out as a guide the other you can use as a template and overwrite it with your info if you like the format or change it to suit your needs.

In this NJCAN Check In we are sharing useful assessment Quick Starts on NJCAN360 that can be a helpful resource in guiding you and your students when using NJCAN360. We also want to take some time to discuss possible ideas to do after your students have taken the assessments. Here are a few sample questions to ask students:

• Do your assessment results make sense to you?
• Do you see occupations that interest you?
• Do the personality types fit you?

Remember, these results are not meant to be the final destination, but more of the beginning of the journey. Possible fields that the student may be interested in. A way to discover their strengths and skills they many need to attain or improve upon. It's also a great idea to retake assessments from semester to semester and from year to year to gain a deeper perspective into how your goals maybe be changing.

O*NetOnline.org BLS Occupational Handbook
​The newly updated Occupational Outlook Handbook, one of the nation’s most widely used career information resources, is now available online at  https://www.bls.gov/ooh/home.htm. 

In a News Release the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects:
· Employment to increase by 11.5 million over the 2016-26 decade
· Health care industries and their associated occupations are expected to account for a large share of new jobs projected through 2026 

· The labor force will continue to grow slowly and to become older and more diverse

All of the O*NET questionnaires are available for viewing in PDF format.

Each worker sampled from an establishment is asked to complete one of the following questionnaires related to their occupation:

• General Work Activities Questionnaire
• Knowledge Questionnaire
• Work Context Questionnaire

Additionally, each establishment respondent is asked to complete a short background questionnaire. 

• Background Questionnaire

Workers are also asked to complete a short Task Ratings Questionnaire; this questionnaire is presented as a section of the hardcopy questionnaire. Because the Task Ratings Questionnaire is customized for each occupation, it is not included in the PDFs listed above. Instead, please see the Task Ratings Questionnaire section below.
