I met John Fugazzie when we were both at NJMEP--he as a business development manager, me as both board member and client. I was impressed with John's understanding of workforce development, particularly in manufacturing--and not just the training part of it, but the effort and discipline it would take to for investments in workforce development to pay off. I invited John to join the Newark Workforce Development Board, of which I was Chair at the time, and he participated extensively in our strategic planning sessions, the results of which are still operational today. John was very selfless with his time--something I have seen time and time again. I got to know John well and was very excited to find out that he landed at Barnabas, since there is no firm better than Barnabas health at workforce development.

During his time at Barnabas we stayed in touch and John continued to offer up advice in all sorts of areas he had expertise in--not just workforce development, but also relationship building and community development--even to the point where he offered up great advice on how to reach companies in the health care industry when it became apparent that textile companies in America would be necessary to produce PPE during the PPE shortage when the pandemic first hit.

John is a out of the box thinker who likes to serve his community before he even thinks about himself. I would put him on any board I serve on as his participation, pragmatism, and experience coupled with his creative problem solving would be an asset to any organization.

I’m 2011 I was diagnosed with cancer while my siblings and I took care of my mom who was dying from cancer.
I was devastated. I was surrounded by death. Filled with fear of dying. I prayed to God for a life preserver. Something that would shift my focus from death to life.

One morning I looked at our town paper, something I rarely do, and saw an article entitled ‘Neighbors helping Neighbors.’

In 2008 I started writing a blog called People helping People because I believe that we need each other to navigate life.

I read the article and recognized a kindred spirit in John.
I called him, told him about my experience and asked if I could be of any use to those he served. He said yes right away and asked me to attend a few meetings. He wanted me to work with another volunteer to start a NhN group in the Ridgewood library.

After we got the group started John asked if I would coach some of his dedicated volunteers as a way to thank them.

I never told John about why I reached out to him 11 years ago until today 5-17-2022.

He has helped countless people throughout these years and continues to be a shining light of human goodness, dignity and respect.

Thank you John. You saved my life, gave me hope through serving those in need.

I had the privilege of meeting John through my participation in the group he founded, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, first as a weekly meeting attendee and then as a board member. He is a true leader, with incredible passion and energy and the ability to utilize available resources effectively and efficiently. John has the innate ability to get things done with skill and precision, no matter how big or small the project - or the budget (even with $0) - or how imminent the deadline. Two weeks prior to the second anniversary conference for Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors, we lost our venue due to a scheduling mishap on the part of that venue. Without flinching, John shifted gears and quickly set a new plan in motion. He procured a replacement venue, raised $2,600 in a week and arranged for several high value speakers to present on a pro-bono basis. In Neighbors Helping Neighbors, John created and leads an ever-expanding group that serves as an incubator for the continuous flow of "pay-it-forward" acts by others. This pay-it-forward mentality, which John spearheaded, pervades through NHN's members, leaders, friends, and, often, complete strangers. Very few people - if any - could do what John has done with NHN. With no money, he has taken a local weekly meeting group of 3 or 4 people and turned it into a nationally-recognized organization with over 1000 members.

John was one of my favorite teachers at FDU. I had the pleasure of attending several of John's classes. They were invariably interesting and thought provoking. Its now my sophomore and I have never enjoyed a class so much, while gaining a vast amount of knowledge. Professor Fugazzie gave us an amazing assignment where each one of the students had to research their own section on marketing. We dealt with a real life case where a man named Max, a friend of the professor, is trying to sell art and we helped him with the marketing of the business. We each had to give a presentation on it at the end of the course. The reason why it was so enjoyable was because the research we did had an effect on a person’s life. The experience was amazing!

I worked with John at A&P in 2012 on the Encore Program’s Computer Generated Ordering Initiative. John was the Merchandising leader on the team, not because he was assigned to the project but because he proactively engaged his business unit into the project. John knew and welcomed his stakeholder role, he assisted in the breakdown of silos across the organization, identified the process and knowledge gaps and championed for change management. He and his team were strong partners raising potential risks and issues in order to plan and mitigate proactively for our seasonal product challenges to integration planning. John makes things appear effortless; he empowers his staff to own their business, voice concerns and offer solutions because he wants what is best for the company.
