Christmas 2025: Discovering the True Meaning and History

Christmas is more than lights, gifts, and festive cheer—it’s a celebration rooted in centuries of tradition and deep cultural significance. At its heart, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, symbolizing hope, peace, and goodwill.
Picture
Over time, it has evolved into a global holiday blending religious observance with customs like decorating trees, exchanging gifts, and gathering with loved ones. From its origins in early Christian worship to modern-day traditions, Christmas continues to remind us of the values of generosity, unity, and joy that transcend generations.

Origins of Celebrating Christmas

  • Christian Roots: Christmas marks the birth of Jesus Christ, celebrated on December 25 by most Christian denominations. The date was chosen in the 4th century by the Roman Church, possibly to align with existing pagan festivals.
  • Connection to Pagan Festivals: Early celebrations coincided with Saturnalia (Roman festival of Saturn) and Yule (Norse winter solstice festival), which featured feasting, gift-giving, and greenery.
  • Spread Across Cultures: By the Middle Ages, Christmas became a major Christian feast, incorporating local customs like caroling and nativity plays.

Most Common Traditions
  1. Decorating Christmas Trees
Originated in Germany in the 16th century; now a global symbol of Christmas.
  2. Gift-Giving
Inspired by the gifts of the Magi and St. Nicholas’ generosity; now central to modern celebrations.
  3. Nativity Scenes
First popularized by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century to depict the birth of Christ.
  4. Christmas Carols and Music
Singing hymns and festive songs dates back to medieval Europe.
  5. Advent Calendars and Wreaths
Advent traditions prepare for the coming of Christ during the four weeks before Christmas.
  6. Santa Claus
Based on St. Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop known for his kindness; evolved into the modern figure through Dutch and American traditions.
  7. Feasting and Family Gatherings
Sharing meals symbolizes unity and joy during the holiday season.
Setting up Model Trains under the tree or in another location.

Christmas Elves First Emerged in the 19th CenturyIt wasn’t until the 1800s that elves began to be associated with Christmas. One of the earliest references was Clement Clarke Moore’s 1823 poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” (more commonly known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” from its first line), which described Santa himself as a “jolly old elf.” In 1856, Little Women author Louisa May Alcott wrote a short story called “Christmas Elves” — but that story was never published, so it didn’t popularize the concept.
Nonetheless, the concept of Santa’s elves had certainly entered the cultural lexicon by the 1870s, when other works started mentioning elves. A December 1873 issue of Godey’s Lady Book — a highly influential women’s magazine that also helped popularize the Christmas tree as a tradition in America — led with an image of Santa’s workshop, complete with his elf helpers.

My Trains

1. Perfect Fit Around the Tree
  • The circular track of early train sets naturally fit around the base of a Christmas tree, creating a visually appealing display.
  • It added motion and excitement to the holiday décor, making the tree feel more dynamic.

2. Symbol of Travel and Connection
  • Trains represented journeys home for the holidays, a powerful theme in the early 20th century when railroads were the main mode of long-distance travel.
  • They evoked the idea of families reuniting, which resonated deeply with the spirit of Christmas.

3. Marketing and Department Store Displays
  • Companies like Lionel heavily marketed trains as the ultimate Christmas gift starting in the early 1900s.
  • Department stores featured elaborate train displays during the holiday season, cementing the association in popular culture.

4. Nostalgia and Wholesome Entertainment
  • After WWII, trains were seen as educational and family-friendly toys.
  • They became part of the idealized American Christmas scene, often depicted in advertisements and holiday cards.

5. Integration with Holiday Villages
  • Over time, trains were paired with miniature Christmas villages, creating a festive, storybook setting that enhanced the holiday atmosphere.

Model trains have a fascinating connection to Christmas traditions. Here’s some historical background:

History of Model Trains at Christmas
  • Late 19th Century Origins
The tradition began in the late 1800s, when toy trains were introduced by companies like Märklin in Germany and Lionel in the United States. These early trains were often wind-up or clockwork models.
  • Early 20th Century Popularity
By the 1900s, electric trains became a luxury gift for children. Lionel trains, introduced in 1900, were marketed as the ultimate Christmas present, often featured in department store holiday displays.
  • Under the Tree Tradition
Placing trains under the Christmas tree became popular because:
    • The circular track fit perfectly around the tree base.
    • It symbolized movement, travel, and connection, resonating with the holiday spirit of visiting family.
    • Advertisements in the 1920s and 1930s reinforced this image, making trains a centerpiece of Christmas morning.
  • Post-War Boom (1940s–1950s)
After WWII, model trains surged in popularity as affordable electric sets became widely available. They were seen as wholesome, educational toys, and many families made them part of their annual holiday décor.
  • Modern Nostalgia
Today, model trains evoke nostalgia and tradition. Collectors and hobbyists often create elaborate holiday villages with trains running through snowy landscapes, continuing a century-old custom.

The Elf on the Shelf concept began in 2005 when the book The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition was published by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. The idea was based on a family tradition they had when Chanda was a child, where an elf would "watch" the children and report back to Santa Claus each night.
The book came packaged with a small elf doll, and the tradition quickly grew into a popular holiday phenomenon. Today, it's widely recognized as a fun way for families to engage in Christmas activities, with the elf moving to different spots each day to "observe" behavior.

1. Origins and Launch (2005)
  • The concept started with the self-published book The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition by Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell.
  • It included a small elf doll and a story explaining that Santa sends elves to watch children and report back each night.
  • The elf “moves” to a new spot daily, creating a sense of magic and anticipation.

2. Viral Growth Through Social Media
  • Parents began sharing creative elf setups on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.
  • This turned the tradition into a visual and interactive trend, inspiring others to join in.
  • The hashtag culture amplified its popularity, with millions of posts showcasing funny or elaborate elf scenes.

3. Expansion into Merchandise and Media
  • The brand grew beyond the original book and doll:
    • Elf pets (like reindeer and Saint Bernard plush toys).
    • Animated specials aired on TV and streaming platforms.
    • Branded accessories, clothing, and themed products.

4. Integration into Pop Culture
  • References in TV shows, movies, and memes made the elf a recognizable holiday icon.
  • Retailers embraced the trend, creating entire sections for Elf on the Shelf products.
  • Schools and workplaces even adopted elf-themed activities.

5. Community and Creativity
  • It became a creative outlet for parents, with elaborate setups ranging from funny pranks to educational themes.
  • Some families use it as a way to teach kindness or incorporate charitable acts during the holiday season.

6. Criticism and Debate
  • While beloved by many, some critics argue it promotes surveillance or adds stress for parents.
  • Despite this, the tradition remains strong and continues to evolve with new ideas and products.

Would you like me to give you 10 of the most creative Elf on the Shelf ideas for this holiday season—including some that tie into multicultural themes or sustainability, which align with your community-focused initiatives?

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests
