Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who had organized "Mother's Day Work Clubs" to improve health and sanitation during the Civil War [2].

Another key figure was Julia Ward Howe, who proposed a "Mother's Day for Peace" in 1872, advocating for mothers to unite against war [2]. Although Howe's version of Mother's Day didn't gain widespread traction, it laid the groundwork for the holiday's eventual establishment.

​Mother's Day in Italy, known as La Festa della Mamma, has a unique history. The celebration was initiated by a parish priest in Assisi in May 1957 [1]. Within a year, it became a cherished holiday across all 20 regions of Italy, honoring the enduring bond between mothers and their families [1].
Interestingly, the first official Mother's Day in Italy was introduced by the Fascist regime in 1933 as "La Giornata della madre e del bambino" (the day of the mother and child), aimed at honoring mothers who bore children for the regime [2]. However, the modern celebration as we know it today was popularized in the late 1950s.
