Northern Cardinals

The Northern Cardinal is a fascinating bird species. Here's a detailed look at these beautiful creatures:

Appearance
  • Male Cardinals: Known for their striking bright red plumage, black face mask, and crest on top of their head.
  • Female Cardinals: More subdued in color, typically brownish with hints of red on the wings, tail, and crest.
Habitat
  • Range: Northern Cardinals are found throughout North and Central America, from Canada to northern Argentina.
  • Environment: They thrive in woodlands, gardens, shrublands, and wetlands. They are also common in suburban areas and parks.
Behavior
  • Diet: Cardinals primarily eat seeds, fruits, and insects. They are frequent visitors to bird feeders, especially those stocked with sunflower seeds.
  • Song: Both male and female cardinals sing, which is somewhat unusual among North American songbirds. Their songs are varied and can include clear whistles and repetitive phrases.
  • Territorial: Male cardinals are known to be quite territorial, often defending their area aggressively against other males.
Breeding
  • Nesting: Cardinals build their nests in dense shrubs or low trees. The female typically lays 3-4 eggs, which she incubates for about 12-13 days.
  • Parenting: Both parents feed the chicks, which fledge about 10-11 days after hatching.
Symbolism
  • Cultural Significance: Cardinals are often seen as symbols of vitality and are associated with various cultural and spiritual meanings. In some traditions, seeing a cardinal is believed to be a sign of good luck or a visit from a loved one who has passed away.
Conservation
  • Status: Northern Cardinals are not currently considered endangered. They have a stable population and are widespread across their range.

Attracting cardinals to your garden can be a rewarding experience! Here are some tips to make your garden a welcoming habitat for these beautiful birds:

1. Food
  • Feeders: Use bird feeders that are sturdy and can accommodate cardinals, which are medium-sized birds. Platform feeders or feeders with large perches work well.
  • Seeds: Cardinals love sunflower seeds, especially black oil sunflower seeds. You can also offer safflower seeds, cracked corn, and peanuts.
  • Fruits: Fresh fruits like berries, apples, and grapes can also attract cardinals.

2. Water
  • Birdbaths: Provide a birdbath with fresh water. Cardinals prefer shallow birdbaths where they can drink and bathe. Make sure to keep the water clean and change it regularly.

3. Shelter
  • Shrubs and Trees: Plant dense shrubs and small trees where cardinals can find shelter and build their nests. Good choices include dogwood, serviceberry, and hawthorn.
  • Evergreens: Evergreens like pines and spruces provide year-round cover and protection from predators.

4. Nesting Sites
  • Nest Boxes: While cardinals typically prefer natural nesting sites, you can also provide nest boxes. Place them in a quiet, sheltered area of your garden.
  • Materials: Leave out nesting materials like small twigs, grass clippings, and pine needles to help cardinals build their nests.

5. Avoid Pesticides
  • Chemical-Free: Avoid using pesticides in your garden, as they can harm the insects that cardinals feed on, especially during the breeding season when they need to feed their chicks.

6. Plant Native Plants
  • Native Flora: Plant native flowers, shrubs, and trees that produce seeds, berries, and attract insects. Native plants are more likely to thrive in your local environment and provide natural food sources for cardinals.
By creating a cardinal-friendly environment, you'll increase your chances of attracting these vibrant birds to your garden. Enjoy watching them and listening to their beautiful songs!

To attract northern cardinals to your backyard, it's important to choose the right bird seed mix. Cardinals are known to favor seeds that they can easily crack open with their strong beaks. Here are some of the best options:
  1. Sunflower Seeds:
    • Black Oil Sunflower Seeds: These are smaller and easier for cardinals to crack open. They are popular among a wide variety of birds [1].
    • Striped Sunflower Seeds: These have tougher shells but are preferred by large-beaked birds like cardinals [1].
  2. Safflower Seeds:
    • Safflower seeds are another favorite of cardinals. They are less likely to attract unwanted birds like starlings and sparrows [1].
  3. Specialty Mixes:
    • Wagner’s 62032 Cardinal Blend: This mix contains a high percentage of black oil sunflower seeds and safflower seeds, providing the necessary nutrients and energy for cardinals [2].
    • Lyric Cardinal Premium Sunflower & Safflower Mix: This blend includes black oil sunflower seeds, safflower, black-striped sunflower seeds, buckwheat, and sunflower kernels, tailored to attract cardinals and other large-beaked birds [2].
  4. Additional Seeds:
    • White Millet: Often included in mixes, it is favored by many birds, including cardinals [3].
    • Cracked Corn: Provides additional variety and is enjoyed by cardinals [3].
Using these seeds in your bird feeders will increase the likelihood of attracting northern cardinals to your yard.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests
