John R. Fugazzie
Stand Up Comedy --- Sitting Down

“After years of making people laugh in everyday situations and firing off quick, witty one-liners, I’ve decided it’s time to see if I can turn that spark into a spotlight. At a ripe age—when most people are thinking about slowing down—I’m stepping up to the mic to chase a lifelong dream: stand-up comedy. My name? Let’s just say it’s a hint that humor runs deep. And while they call it ‘stand-up,’ I’m perfectly fine sitting down if the laughs keep coming. This is my leap into the world where timing is everything, and the punchline is king. Let’s find out if I have what it takes.”

Comedian Bio: John R. Fugazzie

John R. Fugazzie isn’t just stepping into comedy—he’s bringing a lifetime of stories with him. After decades of meeting thousands of people from every walk of life and navigating countless real-world situations, John has developed an eye for the absurd and a knack for turning everyday moments into laugh-out-loud tales. His humor is rooted in observation, sharpened by experience, and delivered with the timing of someone who’s been cracking jokes long before stepping on stage.

John’s comedy style? Pure storytelling. He doesn’t just tell jokes—he paints vivid scenes, introduces unforgettable characters, and takes audiences on a journey where the punchlines sneak up like old friends. From boardrooms to baseball fields, classrooms to coffee shops, John has seen it all—and now he’s ready to share it all, one hilarious story at a time.

They call it “stand-up,” but John’s approach is simple: whether standing or sitting, if the laughs keep coming, the mission is accomplished. At a ripe age of (bleep) when most people are slowing down, John is speeding up—chasing a lifelong dream to see if he has what it takes to make the world laugh.
Spoiler alert: his name already gives you a hint—funny is in his DNA.

Donnie Meets Lefty-Fugazi Diamond | Donnie Brasco |
Johnny Depp, Al Pacino

See Movie Clip

By the way, I hate having to always address the urban dictionary meaning of Fugazi,
who knew that Johnny Depp and Al Pacino (Lefty Ruggiero) would make my life so difficult in the Donny Brasco movie.

Actually having to hear this at two recent organizational events, and of course on sports talk radio.

I usually stop this by telling those who bring up the meaning of fugazi,
That I am connected Fugazzi family back back in Italy, and that they do not want me to  send one of them to pay a visit.

My Italian Family History

The term “fugazi” meaning fake has an interesting history rooted in slang and cultural evolution:

Origins
  • Italian-American Slang:
“Fugazi” likely comes from Italian dialects, possibly a distortion of fugace (meaning fleeting or temporary) or fugare (to flee). Italian immigrants in the U.S. adapted it  into street slang.
  • Early Usage:
It appeared in New York City mob and street culture during the mid-20th century, often referring to counterfeit jewelry or fake goods.
Example: “That diamond’s a fugazi” = “That diamond is fake.”

Pop Culture Boost
  • 1970s–1980s:
The term spread through organized crime stories and urban slang, especially in NYC and Chicago.
  • 1997 Film Donnie Brasco:
Al Pacino’s character famously explains “fugazi” as “a fake, like a phony diamond.” This cemented the word in mainstream pop culture.
  • Hip-Hop & Street Vernacular:
Rappers and artists in the ’90s and 2000s used “fugazi” to describe counterfeit luxury items or inauthentic behavior.

Modern Usage
  • Today, “fugazi” is widely understood as fake, fraudulent, or not genuine, often used in fashion, jewelry, and even personality contexts.
  • It’s also used metaphorically: “That deal is fugazi” = “That deal is shady or bogus.”

✅ Fun fact: The punk band Fugazi (formed in 1987) took the name from military slang meaning “F’d up situation,” which is a separate but related evolution of the term.

Comedians "culture canceled"

The period when comedians were being “culture canceled” refers to the rise of cancel culture—a social phenomenon that gained momentum in the late 2010s and peaked through the early 2020s. Here’s an overview:

What Was Happening?
  • Cancel Culture Defined:
Public figures, including comedians, were called out—often on social media—for jokes or statements deemed offensive, insensitive, or out of step with evolving social norms. This could lead to boycotts, loss of gigs, or reputational damage.
  • Why Comedians Were Targeted:
Comedy often pushes boundaries, and material from older specials or edgy sets was scrutinized under modern standards. Jokes about race, gender, sexuality, or mental health became flashpoints.

Key Drivers
  1. Social Media Amplification:
Platforms like Twitter and Instagram gave audiences direct power to voice outrage and organize boycotts.
  2. Changing Cultural Norms:
Increased awareness of issues like systemic racism, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ rights meant jokes once considered acceptable were now seen as harmful.
  3. Historic Material Resurfacing:
Clips from decades-old specials were rediscovered and criticized in the new context.

Notable Examples
  • Kevin Hart (2018–2019):
Lost his Oscars hosting gig after old tweets resurfaced.
  • Dave Chappelle (2021–2022):
Faced backlash for jokes about transgender issues in Netflix specials.
  • Louis C.K. (2017 onward):
Career stalled after misconduct allegations; later returned to smaller venues.
  • Roseanne Barr (2018):
    Show canceled after offensive tweet.

Impact on Comedy
  • Self-Censorship: Many comedians began avoiding certain topics or adding disclaimers.
  • Shift to Independent Platforms: Some moved to podcasts, YouTube, or self-funded specials to bypass corporate restrictions.
  • Debate on Free Speech vs. Accountability: Sparked ongoing conversations about whether comedy should have limits.

Current Status (2025)Cancel culture’s intensity has cooled somewhat, replaced by nuanced discussions about intent, context, and growth. Many comedians now address cancel culture in their acts—turning it into material.

Comedy and Trump

Here’s an enhanced overview of how Donald Trump has escalated efforts to suppress comedians and critical media content as of 2024–2025:

🎯 Trump vs. Comedians & Critical Media1. Public Threats to Late-Night Comedy
  • In September 2025, Trump suggested revoking FCC broadcast licenses for networks airing critical content—specifically citing Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers—after Kimmel was temporarily pulled following jokes about a conservative influencer’s death. [newsweek.com], [cbsnews.com]
  • He praised FCC Chair Brendan Carr for action against ABC and NBC, saying these networks “aren’t allowed” to mock him. [thehill.com], [deadline.com]

2. Pressuring Networks & Advertisers
  • In January 2025, Trump publicly threatened Comcast/NBC after Seth Meyers criticized him, claiming they should “pay a BIG price” and proposing government intervention. [truthout.org]
  • His media campaign launched “multipronged” pressure—from blocking AP reporters to pursuing FCC investigations into critical outlets—in an effort to silence dissent. [nbcnews.com], [aljazeera.com]

3. Politicizing Comedy Through Conservative Crowds
  • Support for right-leaning comedians (e.g., Shane Gillis, Greg Gutfeld, Tyler Fischer) has surged, fueled by Trump’s public endorsements. [thehill.com], [thedispatch.com]
  • This marks a broader “right-wing comedy comeback”, with conservative comics gaining ground while Trump pressures the media environment. [thehill.com]

4. Evolving from Mockery to Media Warfare
  • Drawing on academic studies, Trump has redefined satire as combat—viewing mocking late-night hosts not as entertainment, but as political attacks warranting censorship. [jstor.org], [link.springer.com]
  • Unlike past presidents, Trump has aggressively used executive orders, lawsuits, and regulatory threats to actively target comedians and content creators. [thedispatch.com], [aljazeera.com]

🔍 Summary & Impact in 2025
  • Launch of attacks: Early 2025 saw expanded action—pressuring networks like NBC and targeting ads for negative coverage. [truthout.org]
  • December 2025 update: Showed full-scale media clash, including lawsuits against AP and rhetoric to shape legal standards. [aljazeera.com]
  • Effect on comedy: Some networks have pulled shows (Kimmel Lives), advertisers have backed away, and comedians are self-censoring or shifting to platforms beyond broadcast TV. [deadline.com], [usatoday.com]

⚖️ The Broader Context

Regulatory pressure Trump pushed for FCC re-licensing punitive measures [thehill.com], [cbsnews.com]
Corporate threats Publicly targeted NBCUniversal and Comcast [truthout.org]
Amplifying loyal voices Boosting conservatives like Shane Gillis, Gutfeld [thehill.com], [thedispatch.com]
Media-access control Denying press access, suing outlets like AP [nbcnews.com], [aljazeera.com]

🔚 Implications for Comedy Today
  • Broadcast comedy censorship: Late-night shows have been limited or canceled by major media groups like ABC, Nexstar, and Sinclair. [deadline.com], [usatoday.com]
  • Shift to independent platforms: Many comics now avoid corporate risk by moving to Satirical podcasts, streaming platforms, stand-alone clubs. [ap.org], [thehill.com]
  • Debate on censorship vs. free speech: Critics argue Trump’s efforts threaten First Amendment rights, citing FCC independence. [cbsnews.com], [aljazeera.com]

🎤 What This Means for Your Set
This provides rich material for a segment or bit on how satire has become ground zero in political power plays—particularly the irony of Trump targeting comedians while calling himself “untalented.”

Performing comedy requires a unique blend of personal characteristics. Here are some key traits that are often found in successful comedians:
  1. Sense of Humor: This is fundamental. A comedian needs to have a natural ability to find humor in everyday situations and convey it in a way that resonates with others.
  2. Timing: Good comedic timing is crucial. Knowing when to deliver a punchline or pause for effect can make all the difference in how a joke is received.
  3. Creativity: Comedians often need to think outside the box and come up with original material. Creativity helps in crafting jokes, stories, and performances that stand out.
  4. Observational Skills: Many comedians draw inspiration from the world around them. Being observant allows them to notice the small, often overlooked details that can be turned into comedic gold.
  5. Confidence: Performing in front of an audience requires a lot of self-assurance. Confidence helps comedians deliver their material with conviction and handle any unexpected reactions from the audience.
  6. Resilience: Not every joke will land, and comedians often face rejection and criticism. Resilience helps them bounce back from setbacks and keep improving their craft.
  7. Empathy: Understanding and relating to the audience's feelings and experiences can help comedians connect better with their audience and tailor their material to be more relatable.
  8. Adaptability: Live performances can be unpredictable. Being able to adapt to different audiences, venues, and situations is a valuable skill for any comedian.

Routines I am working on

The "60+ Friday Night" Shuffle
(Walking onto the stage, adjusting the mic, looking a bit winded)
Thank you! It’s great to be here. You know, I realized something recently. When you cross that 60-year-old finish line, Friday night doesn’t look like it used to. It’s undergone a… medical transformation.

Remember your 20s? Friday night was all about Bar Hopping. You’d get the text: "Meet at O’Malley’s at 10 PM." 10 PM! These days, at 10 PM, I’m three levels deep into a dream about winning a lifetime supply of fiber supplements.

Back then, the goal was to see how many different craft beers you could try before you lost the ability to stand. Now? I’m Hospital Hopping. The goal is to see how many specialists I can visit before I hit my deductible.

The Pre-Game
At 22: You "pre-game" with a shot of tequila and a Red Bull to make sure you have the energy to dance until 2 AM.
At 65: You "pre-game" with a Metamucil chaser and an extra-strength Tylenol just so you can make it from the couch to the fridge without your knee sounding like a bag of microwave popcorn.

The Dress Code
The Bar: You’re looking for your "going out" shirt. The one that makes you look like you own a boat you definitely can't afford. T
he Hospital:
You’re looking for your "easy access" shirt. If it doesn’t have buttons or a loose sleeve for the blood pressure cuff, it’s staying in the closet. And socks? At the bar, they had to match your belt. At the hospital, you’re just rocking those gray non-slip grippy socks they give you in the ER. Honestly? Best traction I’ve had since the '90s.
The "Shot" SelectionThen: "Give me a round of B-52s for the table!" Now: "Is it time for my Shingles vax or the Flu shot? Actually, just give me both. Let's get wild."
The Morning AfterThe Bar Hangover: You wake up with a headache, a dry mouth, and a mysterious charge for a $40 pizza on your credit card.
The Hospital Hangover: You wake up with a bruise on your arm, a dry mouth from the fasting labs, and a $400 co-pay for a "consultation" that lasted exactly 42 seconds.
(Leaning in closer)
The worst part? The "Bar Crawl" has been replaced by the "Pharmacy Crawl." I used to know which bars had the best Happy Hour. Now I know which CVS has the shortest line and which pharmacist doesn't judge me when I ask if this ointment is "supposed to smell like a campfire."

But hey, there is one upside to Hospital Hopping. At the bar, I was always trying to get the bartender's attention. At the hospital? When I walk in, everybody stops what they’re doing, looks at my chart, and says, "Oh, we’ve been expecting you."
Finally! I’m a VIP somewhere!

Lisa’s 60th Birthday Roast

🎤 Lisa’s 60th Birthday Roast

(Raise your glass, warm smile)
“For those who don’t know, Lisa and I have been living together for over 10 years now.
And yes — in the beginning, we started as friends with benefits.”

(Pause… lean in with a smirk)
“But after a decade together, we evolved. We matured.
We are now officially… friends without benefits.”

(Beat… shrug casually)
“And honestly? I can’t complain. Half of America has lost their benefits too — we’re just staying on trend.
We’re a modern household. Co-parenting Leo

🎤 Lisa’s 60th Birthday Roast
(Raise glass)
“Ten years living with Lisa/now Mimi… and let me tell you, it’s been a journey. We started out as two people who got along really well — and after a decade, we’ve evolved into two people who get along really well… as long as we both get enough sleep. And I listen to Lisa”
(Grin)
“We’re modern! We co‑parent our dog Leo.”

🥩 The Prime Rib Achievement Award
“They say tonight is a roast for Lisa. But let’s be honest — I’ve been doing the roasting for years. I’ve cooked about 20 prime ribs in this relationship. Twenty! At this point I’m basically a one‑man catering company.”

🐶 The Leo Era
“Now, about Leo. Because when Lisa turned 60, she made a major life decision — she decided our house needed more… chaos. For three years, Hazel the grand‑dog was the perfect setup: all the fun, none of the responsibility.”
“But then Lisa says, ‘I think we need a dog.’
I explained the logistics, the commitment, the Hazel betrayal storyline…
And naturally, that led to the obvious outcome:
We got Leo.”
“Hazel judges me now. Leo runs the house. And Lisa is probably asking AI how to get him to do more of the housework.”

🧓 Aging… Gracefully?
“Living with Lisa at 60 is like owning a classic car: beautiful, well‑loved… and every morning you’re just praying nothing new starts cracking or rattling.”
“She looks incredible — honestly. She doesn’t look 60. She doesn’t even look 50!  (haha now you all know how smart I really am)
…As long as I’m without my glasses.”
“In the Lily book, I made sure she looked like the youngest grandma in history. Grandma G3 — and I made sure ema was updated to”
Picture

🤖 Lisa’s AI Obsession / Addiction
“Lisa’s relationship with AI is getting intense.
At this point, it’s basically the third roommate.”
“She used to ask me questions.
Now she asks ChatGPT — then checks with Christy — then maybe circles back to me if she doesn’t get the answer she wants.”
“The other day I asked her something.
She literally said, ‘Hang on, let me ask ChatGPT.’
I said, ‘I’m right here!’
She said, ‘I know, but mine gives citations.”
“She uses AI for everything:
Meal ideas, weather, shopping lists, conflict resolution.
And our arguments?
ChatGPT always takes her side.
You have to ask her what her ChatGPT said when she joked telling it she was GOD

❤️ The Sweet Finish
“But here’s the truth. These ten years? I wouldn’t trade them.
Not the dog co‑parenting, not the sourdough experiments, not the prime rib marathons.”
“Lisa, you’re 60 — warm, funny, loving, strong…
A wonderful grandma to Lily, Christian, and Emma…
And a devoted mom to Leo, who definitely thinks he’s the favorite.”
“You’re a little crusty on the outside, but full of love on the inside — just like your bread.”
“Happy Birthday, Lisa.
I love you — even if you love Leo and your sourdough starter just a tiny bit more.”

Here’s a comedic bit you can use for your set about Trump trying to get comedians fired:

Bit Title: “Trump vs. Comedy”[Walk up, pause, grin]

JOHN:
“So apparently, Trump wants comedians fired for making jokes about him.
I’m like… dude, you’ve been the punchline for eight years straight.
At this point, firing comedians is like suing gravity—good luck!”
(Beat for laugh)

hopefully I will not be that funny so i can fly under the radar.

JOHN:
“He says late-night hosts should lose their FCC licenses.
Imagine that meeting:
‘Mr. President, what’s the charge?’
‘They said I look like a Cheeto.’
‘Sir… you do.’”
(Pause, smirk)

JOHN:
“And now he’s threatening networks.
NBC, ABC, even Jimmy Kimmel got pulled for a joke.
Meanwhile, Trump’s out here saying, ‘Comedy should be nice.’
Nice?
Comedy isn’t nice—it’s like Thanksgiving dinner with your family:
Someone’s getting roasted, and it’s usually the turkey.”
(Beat for laugh)

JOHN:
“Honestly, if Trump cancels comedy, what’s next?
A White House-approved joke list?
‘Knock knock.’
‘Who’s there?’
‘Trump.’
‘Trump who?’
‘Trump is the greatest president of all time.’
‘Ha-ha… or else.’”
(Pause for laugh)

JOHN (closing):
“So yeah, Trump wants to cancel comedians.
Good luck, buddy.
If you think jokes hurt, wait until you see your poll numbers.”

I guess orange is the new black. who wants to tell him ?

🎤 “Job Hunting in the Age of AI: A Comedy of Errors

With my Neighbors-helping-neighbors volunteer organization I met JERRY who is looking for a job now in the age of AI  and here I thought AI was Authentic Italian, who is gonna tell Sebastian ?

JERRY:
Hey everyone! So I’ve been job hunting lately. You know, that ancient ritual where you sacrifice your sanity to the gods of LinkedIn and hope they bless you with a paycheck.
I swear, applying for jobs today is like dating apps. You swipe right on a company, send them your best lines, and they ghost you harder than your ex.
“Thanks for applying!” they say.
Translation: “We’ve thrown your resume into a digital volcano.”

JERRY:
And interviews? Oh man. I had one where they asked, “If you were an animal, what would you be?”
I said, “A sloth. Because I move slowly but I’m very committed to hanging in there.”
Didn’t get the job. Apparently, they were looking for a cheetah with Excel skills.

JERRY:
Then there’s the “entry-level” paradox.
“Must have 10 years of experience, a PhD in rocket science, and be fluent in dolphin.”
I’m like, “I once swam with a dolphin at SeaWorld. Does that count?”

JERRY:
And now… AI is taking over!
I uploaded my resume to a job site, and the AI said, “Rejected. You used Times New Roman. We prefer Calibri.”
I didn’t know fonts were a dealbreaker. What’s next?
“Sorry Jerry, your resume smells like desperation.”

JERRY:
I even tried networking. Went to an event, met a guy who sells insurance for exotic pets.
He asked, “Do you own a llama?”
I said, “No, but I feel like one. I’ve been carrying emotional baggage for months.”

JERRY:
And let’s talk about AI interviews.
I had one with a chatbot. It asked me, “Describe a time you overcame a challenge.”
I said, “This conversation.”
It replied, “We’ll keep your resume on file.”
Yeah, right next to the recycling bin.

JERRY:
Eventually, I got a job offer.
They said, “We pay in exposure and pizza.”
I asked, “Is it at least good pizza?”
They said, “No. It’s gluten-free cauliflower crust.”
I said, “I’ll take unemployment.”

JERRY (closing):
So yeah, job hunting in 2026 is wild. You’re not just competing with other humans anymore. You’re up against robots, algorithms, and job descriptions written by drunk philosophers.

But hey, if you’re out there searching—hang in there. And remember: if AI ever takes your job, just become a llama insurance agent. Apparently, that market’s booming.
